Flights Frankfurt - Sarajevo

Discover Sarajevo

Two decades after the end of the tragic war that brought so much destruction, Sarajevo is once again full of life. Baščaršija, the city's famous bazaar district, is as vibrant as it has been for centuries. Here you can still see the former caravanserais, known by the Turkish name han, built by the Ottomans, who founded Sarajevo in 1461.

Here there are many small shops and a covered bazaar, a mosque with lofty minarets and the drinking fountain where the city's inhabitants and passing travellers alike once slaked their thirst. Nowhere else in the world offers the atmosphere that you feel when a steaming pot of Turkish coffee is placed in front of you along with a small cup that you have to hold in your palm because it has no handle.

Sarajevo, the city on the river Miljacka, still reflects its past when it was the crossroads of the occidental Christian and oriental Muslim worlds, a city where people of different ethnicities, religions and worldviews lived together, the city that in 1984 hosted the Winter Olympics. And if you understand the language, you will notice something else that you would otherwise miss – the unsurpassable Sarajevo sense of humour, which has survived even the most difficult of times.
