Fly to Skopje

Macedonia's capital Skopje has its roots in antiquity. In the first century BC a military camp stood here, later growing into the town of Scupi. The 500-year presence of the Ottoman Turks is still evident in the Old Bazaar, the largest bazaar in the Balkans and the largest outside Istanbul. The Old Bazaar district is full of enchanting Ottoman architecture, including the remains of the city's Byzantine past, with mosques, little shops, caravanserais, Turkish baths (hamams) and old buildings converted into museums and galleries.

The river Vardar, on whose banks Skopje stands, is spanned by the famous Stone Bridge, built in the fifteenth century. This bridge is a Skopje landmark and it is no wonder that it even appears on the city's crest. The crest also features Kale, the ancient fortress on a hill above Skopje that offers a fine view of the Vardar and the city.

Other sights worth seeing in Skopje include the Mother Teresa Memorial House, the Porta Macedonia (a triumphal arch) and statues of the revolutionaries Gotse Delchev and Dame Gruev, the conqueror Alexander the Great, and others.
