European Green Capital 2016

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, may be small compared to other European cities, but it has much to offer. Fly with us to Ljubljana, a city of many cultural monuments, friendly inhabitants and countless cafés that are always full of life. Getting there is now cheaper than ever.

Ljubljana for lovers of history and culture

See the remains of Roman Emona, wander through the pretty Old Town, climb up to the medieval castle on its hill above the city, stop to admire Plečnik's Triple Bridge, walk through the colourful market, visit the National Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, and relax in spacious Tivoli Park. As evening falls, you can take a boat trip along the Ljubljanica and enjoy a frog's-eye view of the sights. Ljubljana is also a city of culture, as demonstrated by the numerous music, theatre and film events and festivals taking place throughout the year.

Ljubljana rose

Ljubljana rose

Ljubljana has its own rose. The selection of the Ljubljana rose included both experts and ordinary citizens. The selected rose is white because Ljubljana's colours are white and green. It will adorn parks, rose gardens, meadows, woods and also be used for ceremonial purposes.

Ljubljana for shopping

Another of Ljubljana's many attractions is its wide range of department stores and shopping malls, the most popular of which is CityPark in the BTC City shopping and entertainment complex, where you will find the fashion department store Emporium and branches of well-known fashion retailers such as Zara, Benetton, etc. More prestigious labels can be found in the city centre, at Galerija Emporium on Prešeren Square.

Ljubljana for kids

Children will never be bored in Ljubljana. Take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle and enjoy a view of the city from the top of the castle tower. Visit the Museum of Natural History to admire the mammoth skeleton and learn about animals with the aid of educational games. Living creatures are waiting for you in Ljubljana's spacious zoo. In the summer months, children and parents alike are drawn to the large modern playground in Tivoli Park. If it is not yet warm enough for the seaside (just over an hour away), why not try the Atlantis Water Park next to Kolosej, a modern multiplex cinema and entertainment complex.

Ljubljana EN 2

When travelling to Ljubljana do not miss:

  • The Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square: Plečnik's masterpiece, the heart of Ljubljana and a popular meeting point.
  • The Old Town with the Town Hall and Robba's Fountain: an unforgettable stroll between the historic façades of the Old Town begins by Francesco Robba's wonderful eighteenth-century fountain of the three Carniolan rivers, which stands in front of the baroque Town Hall.
  • Central Market: Plečnik's famous arcades and Vodnik Square, which by day is covered with colourful stalls selling fruit, vegetables and flowers.
  • The Dragon Bridge: this road bridge across the Ljubljanica was built towards the end of the nineteenth century and is famous for its dragon statues.
  • St Nicholas's Cathedral: a baroque masterpiece with a beautiful marble altar. The exterior is adorned with modern sculptures.
  • Ljubljana Castle: elements of the original sixteenth-century castle are still visible in the almost entirely renovated Ljubljana Castle, today used as a venue for concerts, cultural events and weddings.
  • National Gallery: a collection of works from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, including works by noted Impressionists.
  • Museum of Modern Art: a collection of twentieth-century works and visiting exhibitions of contemporary art.
  • Tivoli Park: a wonderful place to escape the bustle of the city, just a short walk from the centre.
