Ice skating at the Hôtel de Ville
Winter romance Paris-style
There is no shortage of ice rinks in Paris in the winter months, especially in December and January. They are popular with locals and tourists alike, with everyone keen to show off their skills, be they pro skaters or absolute beginners. Another factor contributing to the popularity of Paris's ice rinks is the fact that admission is usually free (although you will have to pay for skate hire if you don't bring your own skates).
One of the most famous ice rinks is undoubtedly the one at the bottom of the famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées, while one of the most picturesque can be found in front of Paris's town hall, the Hôtel de Ville. Could there be anything more romantic than wrapping up warmly and gliding easily over the icy surface that extends in front of this magnificent building, holding the hand of the one you love, as the cold evening air fills with the delicious scent of vin chaud and the distant chimes of Notre-Dame – actually less than ten minutes' walk away? Paris is truly magical. Once you have felt the magic, it stays with you forever.
