25 km from Ljubljana Airport
One of the smallest zoos in Europe, Ljubljana Zoo nevertheless appears in the list of the top 100 zoos compiled by Anthony Sheridan, whose Guide to Europe's Zoos is something of a bible in the zoo world. One of the advantages of Ljubljana Zoo is its location – set in wonderful natural woodland at the foot of Rožnik, just 20 minutes' walk or a short bike ride from the city centre.
The animals feel very at home in this green environment, protected from the bustle and noise of the city. Visitors enjoy a similar sensation, as they stroll along winding paths among animals from five continents – including stars such as the red panda, the black-capped squirrel monkey, the Persian leopard, the Moluccan cockatoo, the black-and-white ruffed lemur and the Siberian tiger. Popular attractions include the impressive tiger enclosure, newly renovated, and a range of programmes and workshops giving visitors the opportunity to get to know the animals close up. The zoo also has a number of unique play areas with family-friendly playground equipment.
