Text: Mankica Kranjec Photos: Jošt Gantar and Aleš Zdešar,

In the heart of Zlatorog's kingdom, amid fragrant flower meadows, lush green forests, crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views, you will find the astonishingly beautiful world of pristine nature that is the Triglav National Park. Rising up above this magnificent mountain landscape is Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak. Below it extends a mountain paradise that offers endless opportunities to explore the riches of nature.

Thrill-seekers can ride the rapids of the emerald river Soča or observe the beauty of the mountains from the air with the aid of a hang glider. Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bohinj or set off on a fishing expedition. Other suggestions include hikes through idyllic forests, a riding tour of the Pokljuka plateau (over several days) or a unique experience of genuine village life. Throughout this area, you will get a sense of the strong tra¬dition and boundless love for nature that the hospitable locals love to share with visitors. Slovenia's only national park is one of the oldest in Europe and a place where you are guaranteed to find the freshness of peaceful tranquillity. No wonder, then, that this magical environment has enchanted such notable visitors as crime writer Agatha Christie, Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Hollywood star Vivien Leigh. The anteroom to Zlatorog's kingdom is so unique that it has frequently been used as a backdrop for foreign film and television productions. You will find yourself enchanted not only by its natural beauty but by the colourful wealth of myths and legends that abound in this unique mountain landscape.
